The Deaf population experiences violence at a rate 1.5 times higher than that of the hearing population. Many Deaf people nationally and statewide do not report abuse because of cultural and language barriers, and inequitable access to resources. Deaf people often have not had direct access to information about violence, healthy, and unhealthy relationships in primary or secondary school.
This session is designed for hearing advocates who would like to better understand and be more attuned to the experiences of domestic violence within the Deaf community. Participants will better understand trauma, oppression, and violence in the Deaf community, to respond and support Deaf victims of violence compassionately and appropriately.
Level: This training is designed for advocates of any experience level.
