Join Michelle Murray of Forward Counseling & Consultation for this interactive training focused on the needs of survivors whose use of substances may complicate their access to shelter services. We will examine common feelings, attitudes, experiences, and family history with different kinds of substance use, which play powerful roles for advocates and survivors. We will discuss common practices regarding substance use in shelter settings. Scenarios and discussion will focus on honoring boundaries that maintain safety for everyone in the shelter community while remaining open and compassionate to survivors with substance use disorder who need our services.
This training is designed for experienced DV program staff who have worked with survivors who use shelter services. It builds on content presented in Trauma, Mental Health & SUD: Skills & Tools for Advocates (August 14-16, 2023) or similar foundational material.
There is no registration fee for staff of most survivor-serving agencies to attend. (Free for End Abuse member programs or those funded by WI DOJ Office of Crime Victim Services or WI DCF; $75 for all others.)
