Join Safe Harbor of Sheboygan County as our Legal Advocate to provide direct victim services supporting individuals, families and loved ones through a variety of legal processes related to domestic violence, sexual assault, and trafficking.

This includes assisting victims of crimes in criminal and civil matters, providing education and support with restraining orders, trial prep and immigration. This position will help empower clients with self-advocacy, assist with safety planning identifying options and problem solving. Position will work closely with community partners on systemic responses to domestic violence, sexual assault and trafficking.

Must be able to represent the mission, values and philosophy of Safe Harbor to program participants, employees, and the general public. Model and promote attitudes of non-violence, anti-oppression, inclusiveness, and power-sharing in all facets of position responsibilities, especially when working with community partners. Be an outspoken voice against violence against women and children, teen dating violence, sexual assault, rigid gender roles, and norms of masculinity within the community through conversation, trainings, social media, and one-on-one conversations.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $44,000.00 – $66,000.00 per year

Primary responsibilities

Direct Service:

  • Model and keep current with best practice related to the law enforcement, criminal justice, laws and legislation involving victims; lead in important decision making regarding internal programs and services surrounding legal services
  • Reviews police reports and establishes contact with victim(s) to check on status/safety. Educates victim(s) on the criminal process and role of advocacy.
  • Provide information about and assistance completing restraining orders, civil and criminal court, immigration laws and other legal procedures.
  • Provide direct services including crisis intervention, advocacy, life skills training, parenting support, legal and medical advocacy, information and referrals, safety planning and goal setting for victims
  • Support victims in providing court preparation and support to individuals and families as they go through court process
  • Provide coverage of the 24-hour hotline as specified by the staff rotation schedule and respond, when needed, to the shelter, hospitals, court or advocacy center anytime during those shifts

Community Relations

  • Develops and maintains relationships with appropriate service agencies, in particular District Attorney’s Office and Law Enforcement in addition but not limited to Heath and Human services, Aging Disability Resource Center, substance abuse care and treatment, health care, sexual assault, children’s services and mental health care, housing and others.
  • Partners with area attorney’s on facilitation of Pro-Se Divorce Clinic
  • Responsible for training community partners on domestic violence, trends, and best practices. This includes small group discussions and meetings with judges, law enforcement and attorneys.
  • Represents and facilitates Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART); in addition to facilitation of High Risk Team and Lethality Assessment Project
  • Calls attention to trends related to children, teen, and family issues relevant to Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), Human Trafficking Task Force (HTTF) and Youth Action Network (YAN) or other meetings as appropriate

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies, Pre-Law, Social Work, Psychology, or related field and/or equivalent relevant experience
  • Previous experience working within the family or criminal court system, or direct human services experience including one year of working with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault engaged in the legal system
  • Excellent judgment, an ability to exercise discretion and tact in difficult or confidential situations and an ability to project a positive, professional image to the public.
  • High degree of flexibility and the ability to problem solve and make decisions individually and /or within a team, in order to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Ability to work with both youth and adults in a variety of settings with a commitment to and experience in working with people from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds and lifestyles
  • Computer proficient including an intermediate/advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Must have reliable transportation and maintain valid driver’s license and insurance coverage for vehicle
  • Bilingual a plus

Agency responsibilities

Staff Relations

  • Collaborate with other advocacy staff members to provide support to the whole family through respite care, parenting resources, and appropriate intervention
  • Works closely with other staff to develop and deliver community education and outreach activities specific to youth and families
  • Assists with training staff and volunteers on legal process and changes to process within local, state and national trends.

Administration

  • Assist with development, implementation and maintenance of data for measuring service delivery outcomes, program effectiveness and follow-up for program population
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate client and other agency records; compile monthly and quarterly resident data, and monthly program reports

Other

  • Attend community and state forums as necessary
  • Identify, train and utilize volunteers to maximize agencies efforts in the community
  • Provide on-call coverage to crisis line, after hours, in an equivalent amount to other advocates/staff
  • Represent the agency at community meetings/functions through participation in collaborative meetings and community outreach presentations
