SUMMARY:  Under the supervision of the Director of Legal Services, the Sexual Violence (SV) Outreach and Client Services Specialist at RISE Law Center (RISE) serves as a liaison between RISE and agencies surviving survivors – in particular, survivors of sexual violence. This includes domestic and sexual violence programs, community organizations, legal and court services, culturally specific communities, and clients at RISE. Through these collaborations the SV Outreach and Client Services Specialist will ensure a victim-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally humble approach to the provision of legal services. The SV Outreach and Client Services Specialist, who will work within the RISE Law Center, performs a broad range of duties including outreach, capacity-building in support of improved legal services and outcomes for RISE clients, case management, client intake and meetings, drafting legal paperwork, and training and supervision of non-attorney interns, volunteers, and legal assistants. The SV Survivor Outreach and Client Services Specialist works directly with sexual assault survivors at RISE to ensure holistic support in their legal concerns. This is a confidential position requiring a high degree of professionalism, confidentiality, and sensitivity. This is an exempt, full-time position.

Primary responsibilities

  • Collaborate with sexual assault victim services agencies, including victims’ services teams in law enforcement, to develop comprehensive responses to sexual assault and to improve identification and referral processes with RISE.
  • Build and grow relationships with partner organizations and local legal services agencies, with the goal of increasing holistic capacity to support sexual assault survivors in their legal needs at RISE.
  • Coordinate and support the development of RISE’s legal outreach and training activities to/with domestic violence and sexual assault agencies, community organizations and culturally specific organizations and communities.
  • Manage assigned projects and research legal issues related to sexual assault and similar victimization, including assisting the coordination of legal technical assistance to community partners and development of legal resources.
  • Provide high-level case management, including:
    1. Perform screening for legal issues, answer inquiries and make referrals when appropriate,
    2. Decisions on acceptance or denial of representation,
    3. Decisions on pro bono versus fee-for-services, and
    4. Billing and accounting.
  • Draft legal documents for review by attorneys, and correspondence to courts, clients, attorneys and other legal agencies and legal documents
    1. Preparation and review of immigration applications, and
    2. Preparation and review of Motions, Affidavits and Orders.
  • Greet clients and guests (in person, over the phone, or via video conference) and assist with and/or conduct client interviews and meetings, including reviewing and signing retainers, collecting payment, and completing and reviewing legal documents with clients.
  • Update and provide administrative support for routine listserv maintenance, knowledge and support for case management or database systems, maintain calendars for the RISE Office and Legal TA (Technical Assistance), develop outreach content for social media platforms and/or listservs.
  • Participate in the recruitment, training and supervision of non-attorney interns, volunteers, and legal assistants.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Trauma-informed and understands evidence-based best practices for working with survivors of sexual violence and related crimes. 
  • Experience working with survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, stalking, human trafficking, child abuse, or other forms of trauma.  
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, able to prioritize clients’ diverse needs. 
  • Works well independently and can meet deadlines. 
  • Works effectively and compassionately as part of a team. 
  • Has a high degree of professionalism and a keen sense of ethics. 
  • Experience organizing outreach activities and training. 
  • Ability to weigh circumstances of individual clients and exercise judgment in the best interest of the clients and the team. 
  • Ability to discern issues related to organizational structure and development using a social justice lens. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Programs including Word, Excel and Outlook, Office 365, and SharePoint. 
  • Valid driver’s license, insurance, and access to a safe, reliable, private vehicle.  

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Spanish or Hmong language fluency 
  • Comfortable both taking initiative and direction.  
  • Ability to research and analyze with attention to detail. 
  • Legal and/or Social Work experience 
  • Prior experience working with immigrant and refugee populations. 
  • Non-profit agency work/volunteer experience 

 Work Conditions/Environment and Physical Demands 

  • Work is primarily performed in an office setting and requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.  
  • Work requires the ability to communicate orally in person or through electronic means, to drive on occasion, to read and discern documents, and type.

The Sexual Violence Outreach and Client Specialist is working toward social legal justice for immigrant and refugee survivors of sexual violence and related crimes. It is important that the Sexual Violence Outreach and Client Specialist is self-motivated and enjoys building relationships, both within the organization and externally, (relator); can collect and organize a database of resources for survivors (input); sets and meets goals (achiever); is a problem-solver who can identify the cause of issues that arise and work toward agreement and cooperation (harmony); and effectively listens to clients and explains complex legal issues in a way that makes sense to and holds the client’s attention and is responsive to their emotions and perspective (communication and empathy).   

This is a permanent full-time position. The salary for this position starts at $50,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
