Part-time, 3rd Shift (24 hours per week)
Shift: Friday, Sunday, Monday 12am-8am

Sojourner Family Peace Center (SFPC) employs dedicated, hardworking professionals who want to be of service to others and make a difference in Milwaukee and surrounding communities.

Sojourner’s Emergency Shelter has been in existence within the Milwaukee community since 1978, and provides emergency shelter services for survivors of domestic abuse, sexual assault survivors, victims of human trafficking and their children.

The candidate we seek must be comfortable assisting hotline callers and residents in the midst of life altering events involving domestic violence, family violence and human trafficking. Experience providing compassionate non-judgmental support to people who may exhibit symptoms related to trauma, behavioral health illness and substance use is required. Must remain calm in stressful circumstances, quickly build rapport with clients and have the ability to work well with hospital and law enforcement partners.

Responsibilities
A Shelter Advocate provides support, advocacy and resource information to callers who have experienced domestic violence or human trafficking. The advocate also engages residents of our 54 bed shelter by ensuring a safe and healthy community living space.

How will your days be spent?
-Receiving, disseminating, and recording crisis, information/referral, jail release calls, and law enforcement calls.
-Interviewing and completing the intake process for new residents and facilitate the outtake process for departing residents.
-Providing support and interpreting shelter rules and procedures for the new and current residents.
-Actively listening and providing a non-judgmental environment for residents.
-Monitoring the ongoing activity throughout the shelter.
-Maintaining updated case notes in the database.

Qualifications

What are we looking for?
-Caring personality with the ability to maintain positive work relationships with diverse groups of people.
-Respectful and accepting of the choices of others and ability to inform residents about choices without exercising undue influence in regards to their decisions.
-Professionals who can remain calm and helpful when others are in crisis.
-Bilingual applicants in Spanish/English are strongly encouraged to apply.

Requirements
-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in social work, human services, criminal justice, psychology, or relevant field.
-Minimum two years of professional experience in advocacy, case management, or related field or combination of education and experience.
-Knowledge of or experience with the issue of domestic violence advocacy and/or on a crisis hotline preferred.
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
-Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people and to positively influence change.
