Sojourner Advocate at the Family Peace Center (FPC)
Full-time (40 hours)
Shift: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm
Sojourner Family Peace Center (SFPC) employs dedicated, hardworking professionals who want to be of service to others and make a difference in Milwaukee and surrounding communities.
Under the direction of the Supervisor of FPC Advocacy Program this position will assist survivors of domestic violence with advocacy and case management needs, determine whether clients need emergency legal representation in matters related to family violence, and assist clients during the process of their legal proceedings to ensure their non-legal needs are met and/or that those needs do not interfere with the outcome of their cases.
The candidate we seek must be comfortable assisting clients in the midst of life altering events involving domestic violence, family violence and human trafficking. Experience providing compassionate non-judgmental support to people who may exhibit symptoms related to trauma, behavioral health illness and substance use is required. Must remain calm in stressful circumstances and quickly build rapport with clients.
How will your days be spent?
-Completing client intakes to help identify individual needs (i.e. safety planning, shelter, legal assistance, mental health, etc.) and provide information and referrals to community resources as needed.
-Collaborating with internal programs and external partners to meet the needs of clients.
-Accompanying clients to family court and other legal proceedings.
-Documenting client activities and maintenance of case files.
Qualifications
What are we looking for?
-Must possess basic knowledge of de-escalation techniques and ability to demonstrate when necessary.
-Have working knowledge and ability to perform Danger Assessment, LAP and other relevant screening tools.
-Caring personality with the ability to maintain positive work relationships with diverse groups of people.
-Respectful and accepting of the choices of others and ability to inform clients about choices without exercising undue influence in regards to their decisions.
-Professionals who can remain calm and helpful when others are in crisis.
-Bilingual applicants (Spanish or Hmong) are strongly encouraged to apply.
Requirements
-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social work, criminal justice, human services or relevant field
-Minimum two years of professional experience in advocacy, case management, human services or related field
-Knowledge of the domestic violence victim advocacy service system, preferably through direct work experience
-Knowledge of Trauma Informed Care practices and working with individuals with mental illness preferred.
