Full-time (40 hours): Monday-Friday, combination of 8am-4pm and 10am-6pm at the Milwaukee County Courthouse (currently working remotely at Sojourner Family Peace Center)

Sojourner Family Peace Center (SFPC) employs dedicated, hardworking professionals who want to be of service to others and make a difference in Milwaukee and surrounding communities.
This position will work remotely within the Family Peace Center and the Milwaukee County Courthouse’s Restraining Order Clinic to support and assist victims from diverse backgrounds. The Sojourner Advocate will work to help clients understand and navigate the civil and criminal court systems processes, explore their options and rights when utilizing these systems, develop safety plans and access needed community resources.

The candidate we seek must be comfortable assisting community members in the midst of life altering events involving domestic violence and other safety concerns. Experience providing compassionate non-judgmental support to people who may exhibit symptoms related to trauma, behavioral health illness and substance use is required. Must remain calm in stressful circumstances, quickly build rapport with clients and have the ability to work well with Court Commissioners, Milwaukee County Sheriff Department, and other advocacy staff.

Responsibilities
A Sojourner Advocate in the Restraining Order Office collaborates with all Sojourner Family Peace Center staff to assist clients and ensure all safety planning, community resources and legal assistance needs are met and provides legal advocacy to victims of domestic abuse, harassment, individuals at risk and child abuse seeking temporary restraining orders and injunctions.

How will your days be spent?
-Making client referrals to agency and community resources as needed.
-Accompanying clients to legal proceedings as requested or necessary; become knowledgeable about basic proceedings in criminal, civil and family law in order to assist and support clients understanding and navigation of these systems.
-Providing services including follow-up telephone calls, information and referral to other services, preparation for the final injunction hearing, and accompanying victims to court.
-Documenting all contacts.
-Assist clients in developing a personal safety plan.
-Working with internal programs and external partners such as the police, district attorney’s office and school systems among others, to maximize the effectiveness of restraining orders and injunctions for clients.
-Assessing clients for emergency legal needs and refer them to the staff paralegal and attorneys at Legal Action Wisconsin or other legal resources.

Qualifications

-Professionals who can remain calm and helpful when others are in crisis.

Requirements
-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in criminal justice, social work, communication, or relevant field.
-Bilingual Spanish speaking is preferred.
-Knowledge of the domestic violence victim advocacy service system through direct work experience is preferred.
-Minimum two-years of experience in advocacy, case management, human resources or related field; or a combination of education and experience.
-Own vehicle to be able to drive to designated locations when needed, (i.e. Family Peace Center, Milwaukee Juvenile Center, etc.).
